COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place

On March 13th I took Eliana, Lillian, and Kyron with me to do my typical Friday morning grocery run to Aldi.  The usually quiet store was packed with people putting as much stuff in their carts as possible and the air was full of tension.  During the entire shopping experience I kept telling myself to stay calm and to just get what I came in for.  I would watch people come in, go straight for the toilet paper aisle, and then go back to the front of the store to stock up on anything else they could.  It didn't take long for Eliana and Lillian to ask what was going on.  Everything was so different, even these little kids noticed something was up.  I explained that people are worried about the coronavirus and want to stay at home for the next few days.  When we got in line to check out and had at least 8 people in front of us, I heard Lillian's little voice say, "It looks like a lot of people are worried about the coronavirus!"

Then, at 2:30 that afternoon an email from Hylie's school was sent:

As health information continues to rapidly evolve surrounding the spread of COVID-19, Lisle District 202 is closing schools and cancelling all sports/activities for students beginning tomorrow, Saturday, March 14, 2020, through Spring Break with a tentative plan of returning on Monday, April 6, 2020.  While there are no known cases in DuPage County, we believe this preventative measure is in the best interest of our learning community.

The day before, on March 12, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints temporarily suspended all public gatherings, including sacrament meeting.

A week later, Illinois ordered a shelter-in-place order where you were only to leave your home for essential items.  Geoff was now working from home, stores were running low on supplies, and the news was reporting increasing infection and death rates and that very little was known about this virus.

I can't lie, I was panicked.  Did we have enough food at home?  What about Kyron's need for milk?  I had been planning on going to Sam's Club next week to stock up on our quarterly meat and diaper needs--but all I could think was will there be any meat or diapers?

The next few weeks at the grocery store were pretty rough for me.  Lots of people, lots of empty shelves, and lots of tension.  People would sometimes force smiles if you happened to make eye contact, but that was about all the interaction you experienced.  I could feel my heart tightening the entire time I was out, I was even starting to feel paralyzed from the stress.  I didn't want to feel this way--I kept telling myself we had food at home, and food was beginning to be more abundant at the stores, but the fear was not dissipating.

Fortunately, the kids have adapted to our new normal without a hitch.  They love the learning time we have in the morning, they have been playing so wonderfully with each other, and the weather has been getting nicer which enables us to get some fresh air.

Because we hold our church services at home, Sundays have become an especially beautiful day.  We take the unrushed time in the morning to get ready--and even do fun things like curl hair--before we sit down as a family, sing hymns, study the scriptures, and when the Bishop indicates, we partake of the sacrament that Geoff is able to prepare and administer.  What sweet memories we are gathering.

The girls have been enjoying some yoga videos to get them going in the morning.  (Notice Lillian's backwards outfit?  It's her new normal these days--she finds it HILARIOUS.)

We're grateful to take advantage of the many online resources that have become free for at-home learning.  Eliana is a HUGE fan of the Scholastic online books.

Lillian and Kyron having fun on the piano during "learning time".

The girls are also getting in touch with their creative side.  The week before schools were closed, the kids got temporary tattoos from preschool.  Lillian thought it would be fun to apply them in one sitting, ha!

Some days go smoothly and others don't.  Some days the girls get their hair braided and nails polished.  Sometimes several days go by without a brush touching their hair.  Some days I'm patient and love all the extra family time.  Some days I am worn down, short with the family, and anxious to know when this will all be over.

Not knowing what the future will look like and how soon we'll be back to 'normal' can be extremely unnerving.  But how grateful I am to be sheltering with people I love so dearly.

Potty Training Lillian

I've decided potty training has become more and more difficult with each child...if Kyron wants to prove me wrong, I'm okay with that.

Ever since Lillian could walk, she did not like it when her diaper was off.  She would get undressed for her bath in her bedroom and hold her little bum all the way to the tub and sometimes she would continue holding her bum during the entire bath.  When asked what she was doing, she would reply, "I don't want anything to fall out."

Several months ago we talked to Lillian about potty training, she seemed to be on board, she went to the store to pick out big girl panties and a toy she could get once her sticker chart was filled.  But when we tried to get her to put the panties on, Lillian looked at me like I had three heads.  There was NO WAY she was taking off her diaper.  Okay, how about let's sit on the potty?  She was excited about that, but when I tried to take off her pants and diaper she freaked out.  She wanted to sit on the potty, but not with a bare bum!  We could not get her on the potty--she would only sit if she kept her diaper and pants on.  Hmm.  Not going to get very far at this rate.  I wasn't ready for the frustration, so I pulled the plug.

Anytime we would talk about potty, Lillian would just say, "No, I'm wearing diapers."  But out of the blue one morning, she woke up and said, "I want to wear big girl panties!"  Okay!  I put on the panties, she had two successes, I was starting to get my hopes up, and then she had an accident.  She did not like anything about pee running down her legs and taking yucky, soaked pants off.  She was done.  She refused to put panties back on, she only wanted diapers.

Months pass.  We start noticing her diapers aren't fitting very well and she is using the biggest size they sell in the store.  So I told Lillian, "Diapers don't fit you anymore, you need to wear big girl panties now."  I pointed to her stash of diapers and let her know when those are gone, we aren't buying anymore--she needed to start using the potty.  So when Friday, March 13th came around, we were all in.  The diapers were gone and the big girl panties were on.  She screamed anytime we asked her to sit on the potty.  She would shake she was so upset.  She was not going potty.  And apparently, Lillian has a bladder of steel because she did not pee all morning long.  By the time it was 1:30, I told her she needed to sit on the potty until she went.  We put the Abby Cadabby potty in front of the TV and sat, and sat, and sat.  FOR OVER AN HOUR!  Finally, she peed!  She got her m&m and her sticker, took a nap, and then held her bladder all afternoon!  Eventually we got her to go potty again--that evening.

Saturday morning, I brought out some glitter markers for a stronger incentive and also put out four different juices on the table.  She guzzled down one and a half juices and then once she realized they were making her pee, she stopped cold turkey.  Saturday and Sunday were ROUGH.  Lots of tears, lots of screams, and lots of accidents.  Anytime the timer went off to remind her it was time to sit on the potty, she would fight us tooth and nail.  My mantra for her was, "I can sit on the potty and be okay." She refused to say it.

But then, when it was time to go potty just before bed Sunday night, she actually sat on the potty and didn't scream.  I went to bed with a touch of hope. She woke up Monday morning dry and willingly put on big girl panties.  She would run and go on the potty without prompts or reminders.  She started drinking more so she could go potty more!  If anyone knows how to work the system, it's Lillian.  She would pee a few tablespoons at a time because she realized she could get more m&ms and stickers if she peed in small increments.  She kept a water bottle by the potty so as she was peeing, she was refilling for next time!  Talk about a 180!  Ha ha!

On Monday, she was still afraid to poop on the potty.  Lillian was on board with having a diaper placed under her bum while she sat on the potty, but all day she didn't poop.

"I'm so proud of myself, I pooped on the potty."

Tuesday, March 17th--just when I thought it couldn't get any better, she pooped on the potty with no problems at all!  Can you believe it?  I sure can't!  We took this video to send to Geoff at work so he could get the amazing news right away!

She has now officially filled her sticker chart, AND got all her glitter markers, AND has her "pup" (we told her it was a cat, but she is insistent it is her pup), AND her McDonald's Happy Meal.  (Yes, as the screaming and refusing to sit on the potty enhanced, I kept piling on the incentives.)

Lillian is now doing an amazing job with the potty--now to convince her to try the BIG potty...

Kyron on the Move

Nothing is safe anymore when Kyron's awake!

Kyron seems to be pretty content with his army crawl--it gets him to where he wants to be and his speed isn't too shabby either.  There are some days his left arm is red and raw from all the miles he put in that day!

Kyron is also pulling himself up onto any object that's around him.

His approach to getting down has been varied:

From cautious

To the splits

And now a graceful plop

He is sure to work out on the stairs multiple times a day.

This little guy LOVES to chase after a ball, he will do this all day--and I could watch his delight in the game all day as well!

When it comes to a game of chase, Kyron is in!

He has just figured out how to cruise around on the furniture, so it won't be long before this kid is running!

Eliana's New 'Do!

Eliana has asked me several times if I could cut her hair--emphasizing that she really means CUT and not a little trim.  The reason for her desire for a short 'do?  She was tired of her hair getting caught in her coat zipper!  Ha ha!  Whatever the motivation--I think she looks darling.

Eliana has pretty thick hair, right after I made the first cut, I realized I had no business trying to do this without any experience.  But it was too late-the first major slice of hair was on the floor.  I was sweating through the entire process and to say I was shocked with how it turned out is quite the understatement!

Kyron's Teeth

Geoff captured this super cute picture of Kyron and bonus that his two little teeth were showing!

Hylie School Picture - 2nd Grade

Just before Christmas, Hylie's school pictures were sent home.  I'm finally posting them!

Hylie gets VERY excited about picture day.  She gets to pick what she wears and how her hair is done.  I had to giggle over her hair style for the day--she never requested anything like it before and hasn't asked for knotted ponytails since!

She's loving and thriving in second grade.  Mrs. Pupillo, her teacher, is so loving and energetic--she sure knows how to motivate her kiddos to work hard.

For Valentine's Day, the kids wrote something kind about each of their classmates on the paper envelopes they made for their valentines.  It was special reading through all of the comments for Hylie.

Happy 1st Birthday, Kyron!

Gah!  I can't believe Kyron is ONE!

I wanted a hot air balloon theme, so I tried to mimic the "UP" concept.  Unfortunately, the tape didn't want to cooperate so I was constantly trying to keep the balloons up AND keep Kyron content during a little photo shoot. Ha!

This kid sure loved all the new surprises

And all the attention!

Getting measured on our wall ruler was NOT on his agenda!

We could not get him to stand up at all!

But when it came to dinner of fruit and quinoa burgers, he was all in!

He also did not have any problems with the chocolate cake!

What a fun and fast first year!  Kyron is showing signs of being a very active and curious boy.  We sure love him to pieces and look forward to all the adventures yet to come.
