Grandpa's Help

Every single time Grandpa comes to visit, he gets involved with our house projects.  This home would not be anywhere near where it is today without Grandpa's help.

During this visit, Dad installed a larger switch and outlet for the basement bathroom, fixed our kitchen drawers, installed a new garage door (which included moving a beam in the garage roof, accommodating the electrical wires for moved beam, and cut and installed some wood on the floor to accommodate the garage's sunken foundation), prepped the bathroom wall for a new medicine cabinet, toilet paper holder, and light, fixed the bathroom vent, replaced our old, rusty column with a new pillar, secured our car battery, and hung our handrails.  And as big as that list is, I'm not even sure it is complete!

Plus, on top of all this, I would find little things Dad did to make things even nicer around here.

(Before Dad came, I 'leveled' the green flower box with rocks, now it has a perfectly angled piece of wood under it!)

During Grandma and Grandpa's visit, our driveway was paved with concrete, so by the time they left, our house had experienced a pretty dramatic face-lift!

Dad, we so appreciate your time, talents, and love how you have helped make our house a home.

Grandma and Grandpa Nelson's visit

This year, instead of holding Grandma Camp in Pennsylvania, Grandma and Grandpa decided to go on tour to see all their kids and grandkids.  We were lucky to have them the last week of June and we treasured every second of it.  Hylie and Eliana were elated to have Grandma and Grandpa here and Lillian was wonderful and rarely fussed about all the attention Grandma and Grandpa gave her.

Grandma brought a carload of crafts and projects to do and Dad brought his tools and house-fixing expertise.  We were so blessed to have them with us and love all the reminders of crafts and completed projects of what a wonderful time we had together.

While they were here, Geoff and I got to go to the temple to do a session and we were grateful to allow Mom and Dad the chance to go to the temple on their wedding anniversary.

Grandma and Grandpa surprised the girls with an opportunity to ride a pony.  Hylie was beside herself with excitement.  Eliana opted out...but now she's been talking about how she wants to ride the pony next time.  Grandma guided the pony for Hylie and found out how stubborn and heavy (it stepped on Grandma's foot, ouch!) a pony can be!

We also took a break from crafts and projects to go downtown to experience a few of the classic Chicago sites.

I love these upside down trees at the Maggie Daley Park

After work, Geoff was kind enough to go straight to Giordano's Pizza and reserve us a spot for dinner

Grandma also surprised the girls with some beautiful hand-made dresses.  Mom was very sweet and incorporated a connection to me with each dress: Lillian's buttons came off an old dress of mine, Eliana's dress was a project Mom started for me when I was little (she had completed all the embroidery on the dress years ago, but life got in the way of completing the dress until now), and Hylie's dress was from a pattern Mom used for a dress she made for me when I was young.

Thank you, Grandma!  We love being showered by your amazing talent!

Hylie's Eye Patch

The girls had some follow-up eye appointments on June 20th where the doctor decided it was best to start patching Hylie's left eye for two hours every day to strengthen her right eye.

Hylie has been such a trooper about wearing her eye patch.  The first few times were very difficult, her vision was extremely blurry and she kept asking to take it off.  We kept explaining to Hylie why she had to wear the patch and now, after only a few weeks of patching, she no longer complains about it.

To help make wearing the eye patch a little more fun, Hylie designs her patches.  She also came up with the idea of drawing an eye on her patch so it doesn't look like she's wearing an eye patch.

I think I like her designs a lot better than the drawn eyeball approach...

Here's hoping this will help improve her vision!

Basement Make-over

Around the second week of June, Lillian had a few better nights of sleep--which, of course, means Mom got a little more sleep as well.  I forgot how great it felt to have some more shut-eye under my belt--I had more energy, I felt like I could complete a coherent sentence, and I was able to stay more focused on a task.  It was so incredible, that I decided it was finally time to paint the basement!  So I pulled everything away from the walls, covered up all the furniture, and started sanding.  I figured if I had all the paint supplies out, I might as well do the basement bathroom at the same time.  Then, of course, when I was knee-deep in this undertaking, Lillian had a couple of rough nights, ha ha!

Here are some before pics:

Hylie and Eliana kept begging to help paint, so I saved them a patch to do, with a LOT of assistance from mom. ;)

Yep, we're keeping a patch of the red wall behind the TV.  Hanging the TV was a little stressful for me four years ago, so I decided to keep the mounting bracket as is so when we rehung everything, we'd know it would still work just fine.

And the "AFTERS":

I know, I still need to hang pics on the wall.  But let's be honest, if I wait until I finally print out updated photos, frame them, and hang them before I blog about this project, you wouldn't see this post until October...

I'm so glad to finally have this project done!  I love how everything turned out and even though it was a last-minute, impulse decision to do, it worked out perfectly because Grandma and Grandpa came right after I was done painting the main room and Grandpa was able to help with the bathroom medicine cabinet, light, and switches--there is no way I could have done those aspects of the project.

I decided to add a white frame around the mirror

and some storage baskets for the finishing touches.

We love how this home is coming together!

Eliana Lately

During these past two months, we have seen Eliana's personality blossom and we love watching her explore and start becoming her own little person.

She loves Dora the Explorer and is constantly singing the theme song and also belting "Super Babies" which is a little jingle used in one of the Dora episodes.  Eliana also loves trucks!  She'll hear the rumble of the garbage truck and will then be found perched by the window so she won't miss watching the truck in action.  In  nursery, she'll often be found over by the race track with all the cars and at the library she is glued to the trains and moving them all over the tracks.  When our driveway was being demolished, it was extremely hard to get her away from the window--it was truck heaven for her!

Many times when we go to a park, we will often find Eliana pushing the stroller instead of playing on the playground.  Ha ha!  And when she's running around the house with her play stroller, watch out!  She stops for nothing!

Eliana is also talking up a storm now-a-days.  Her cute little voice will be heard all throughout the house, whether she's asking for a snack, for 'poop-paste' (toothpaste), 'taper' (paper), or if she's asking 'hold you me' so she can get some snuggles.  Whenever you call for her to come get her shoes on or get ready for bed, you'll hear her holler back, "CO-O-O-MIN'!" at the top of her lungs and then her little feet start shuffling and her elbows start swinging back and forth as she races to get to her next destination.

She's also very much on her own agenda as well.  We often hear, "Do myself!" or when she asks for a snack, it is a very specific request (goldfish, pretzels, or crackers) and if you do not produce said request, WATCH OUT!  ha ha!  Sometimes getting dressed in the morning is quite the ordeal, because if she's already involved with an activity and you ask her to get dressed, good luck!  Having said that, though, there are times she will get off her own agenda--Eliana is a trooper when it comes to trying new foods.  If she sees something unfamiliar on her plate, she'll let you know she doesn't want anything to do with it, but usually if you ask her to try one bite she willingly does so (and 99% of the time realizes that she actually likes it!)

Eliana is also singing a great deal.  She loves the songs she learns in Nursery: Here we are Together, Our Bishop, Choose the Right, Scripture Power.  And her ABC's are getting better and better with each note.  I love hearing her sing.  It reminds me of when she was 6 or 7 months old and I'd be rocking her to sleep, she would give a little hum and wait for me to hum back (or vice versa) and we'd go on for minutes humming back and forth.  Music also would help her calm down at night and go to sleep.  If Eliana was upset and didn't want anything to do with bedtime, Geoff or I would start singing to her, her fingers would go in her mouth and her head would hit the pillow.  When the song was done, though, she wouldn't always stay in that position!  Now, she's much better at staying in her bed and often we'll hear her little singing voice coming from her bedroom when she's supposed to be snoozing--but as long as she stays in her bed we let her belt out her little ballads.

Eliana is helping out more and more around the house with making her bed, cleaning up her clothes and toys, she still loves to help with the dishwasher, and lately one of her favorite things to do is give Lillian her bottle.  Anytime Lillian's milk dribbles down her chin though, Eliana will rip the bottle out of her mouth, grab the burp cloth, and while she is smothering Lillian's face she'll declare, "Wipe mess!".  Every time I intervene, however Lillian never seems to mind how Eliana helps her.

Eliana has her little quirks, too.  Recently, she's grown attached to one of our beach towels and will often insist on having it on her head...at the table...while she eats.

We love Eliana and all the laughs she brings!
